I never go for cheap. Food isn't worth being cheap. My personal favourites are Octopus' Garden on Cornwall and Maple, Kingyo (more of an Izakaya) on Denman & Haro, Yuji's Japanese Tapas on 4th & Burrard, Shiro on Cambie & 15th, or Tokiwa on Oak and 22nd. Of all the places I listed, Shiro is probably the best bang for the buck.
I used to go to Kibune on Cornwall & Yew, but they've really dropped in quality recently. Their prices are also a bit high. I didn't mind the high prices, as the food was good. I've noticed hardly any Japanese people there anymore, just Kits locals who don't know any better.
