The 30" Apple Cinema Display isn't very good. The new 27" screen looks promising for the price though.
The NEC has a HUGE colour gamut, and has built-in hardware calibration. Also, although it is a CFL screen, each of the 16 or so CFL's are individually monitored and adjusted for even brightness. It's about $1200 retail.
As you have an iPad, get that app that places all of your Photoshop palettes on the iPad so that you can have the entire main screen for the image you're working on. It works seamlessly via Bluetooth with Macs, and you can choose your tools by touching the screen!
