You might want to think about buying Nikon outside of Canada. If anything goes wrong with the camera or lens, Nikon Canada WILL NOT repair any Nikon product bought outside of the country even if you offer to pay for the repair.
For what you want to do, a D90 will be a great camera, but you might also want to consider the D3000 or D5000 as they are cheaper but will not compromise image quality. An ideal lens might be the 35mm f1.8.
