maybe you haven't gone to absolute muscle failure... i'm not saying thats what it is in your case but we've all probably at one point thought we were hardcore and pushing it hard... then you learn to push past and get to a whole nother level of intensity, and what you thought was hardcore really wasn't
same goes for shoveling food down
