I have a sony touch e-book reader and I love it to bits. I'm stuck at a comp all day for work so the LAST thing I want to do is read my books on a backlit monitor (like an Ipad or a netbook).
The e-ink really gives you the experience of looking at a page in a book. For an avid reader it pays itself off really quickly too. On average I read three to four books a month and I save about $5-10 a book (I read a lot of non fiction which doesn't come in cheap paperbacks) so I save myself $20-40 a month. The other handy thing is your book is never out of stock. If kobo or one of the other ebook sellers carries it you can get it when you want it.
I actually picked mine up initially when I was travelling a bit but packing very light, that way I could pack like 10 books in the space of less than 1 and not eat up my very limited baggage space. I think if you 1. travel a lot or 2. read a fair bit they're definitely worth while. For very light/casual readers not nearly as much.
