Which service provider are you using?
Telus and Bell only have a 3G network, they don't have a GSM network. So if you are using Telus/Bell then you won't get any signal if you kill the 3G network.
If you are using Fido/Rogers and this happen then look for the setting that says use Both GSM/3G or something that have the same meaning (sorry I don't have the iPhone with me right now to know the exact wording)
