I use an older set of pads from ice for ball hockey in a gym, so I didn't really mind doing the following to my pads. It's more of a permanent fix and it works really well. My solution was to buy a tougher vinyl fabric from Fabricland, cut it to size and contact cement it to the inside of the pad, where the leather might otherwise stick to the floor. I've found that it minimizes friction to the point where it's only a little bit off to how you slide on ice. It does tend to collect dust if you play in a dirty gym, though.
It's lightweight, inexpensive, durable, and effective.
These are my pads: you can also see that the aesthetics haven't really been altered and they look as though unmodified.
