I know 5 or 6 people who have tried to appeal courses--2 of them were successful. One because of a death in her immediate family, and another because he became ill (enough to be hospitalized) during the term.

The only reason I've heard of appeals being granted is due to deaths or medical conditions. Apparently "financial duress"--i.e., you have kids and your spouse lost their job so you had to go work full time--is also a reason, but I haven't heard of any appeals based on that, personally.
