^If you don't mind buying used, go for a D40/D60 you can probably get one for around $200-250 for the body and then you'll have a whole $600 to spend on a couple lenses! Keep in mind though, the D40/D60 does not have autofocus on the body so you'll be manual focusing the whole time with lenses that don't have a built in focusing motor thing. Also, when buying used try to get the shutter count of the camera. I believe the lower end Nikons have about 75k-100k shots until the shutter starts to wear?
D40/D60 + 18-55mm + 50mm 1.8 and you should be good to go! I shot with a kit like that for about 2.5 years. Should be good enough to introduce you to all of the basics. A 50mm 1.4 is double the price of the 1.8 but well worth it imo.
