Definitely taking a course would be ideal. As for the costs, if you want credible and excellent rider training course, I as well as many people here would recommend PRS

Their course is $800 but they provide very comprehensive training for beginners. Ya it might be a bit pricy, but since you dont know if you want to ride or not, you wont be able to get gear + bike + insurance for under $800, and unless you have a buddy willing to let you ride his bike, a course would be ideal.
