Everythign was fine until today but now when my phone goes to sleep mode my wifi auto-disconnects. This didn't happen prior and it's wifi staying on even in sleep mode is a new feature on 4.0+.

This has always happens since my 3G days. Wifi disconnects when it sleeps and when you press the home button it connects and stays connected for a little bit after the screen turns off. I notice it because when I press the home button to check the time, I would see the 3G or Edge icon and then it turns into a wifi icon. I guess they do this to save battery. Also my phone has always been able to fetch my mail when it's in sleep mode. It auto connects to the wifi to fetch emails at whatever time you set it to fetch at, then it disconnects.
