Remote Desktop is a good suggestion. It's like sitting in front of that machine. If you go that route, try something like LogMeIn (
http://www.logmein.com). No IPs to memorize. Just login to the site, and then connect to your desktop.
Unless your internet connection has good upload speeds, transferring files from your home desktop to your remote location will be very slow.
