That's over 4K per month after taxes. Unless you're renting a new condo or driving a new 5-series, that's more than enough to live a basic lifestyle. I don't want to sound like your mother, but maybe your perceptions of what a basic lifestyle is have been skewed?

If I had a girlfriend, and she wanted to have an average home and a yard for the kids to play in, guess what? My $80,000 a year isn't going to cut it unless I want to move to Abbotsford and spend 4 hours a day in a car that's going to be something crappy because again, that's what $80k gets you in this city.

Yes, that's true, but let's face it: most people who are buying property these days are getting help from family. There's a tonne of home equity out there and while many have concerns about that, it is what it is.

I've got a few friends on this board that make a lot more money than myself, one of them is banned, and even with their high income, life is not easy in this city.

It isn't, but you don't need to drive a new luxury car, or buy designer labels. I often get caught up in the rat race myself, but you really just have to look the other way sometimes.

I can't even afford a hot girlfriend in Vancouver and probably end up with some fatty that I'm unattracted to just because we live in a city that costs so much and pays us bullshit wages.

Who says you need a girlfriend? Do you have a desire to have a family any time soon? The only major thing that costs more in this city relative to other cities is the cost of housing. Don't take this personally, but I think 80K is a very decent salary that still goes a long way in this city.
