Lol at comparing martin luther king to a situation like this..I get what ur saying but some drunk idiots calling u a faggot and u trying to retaliate isn't always a smart thing, especially when ur greatly outnumbered. If those people said something to or about ur girlfriend then I see why u would retaliate, but being called a name isn't worth risking ur life for in a matter like this. Now a days it's rare for people to not be holding something (mace, shank, strap etc).
