Scaled and curved are completely different things but in the end aim to have similar outcomes.
Curving is basically assigning grades to a pre-determined distribution of grades among the students in a class (so like 10 As, 15 Bs, 40 Cs, 15 Ds and 10 Fs).
Scaling is when the average is either too high or too low and as a result, everyone is being brought down or brought up a certain percentage.
And no. Not all math classes are scaled or curved. The prof will tell you (or not depending if the how the averages are looking) if it is or it is not.
And getting a lower mark doesn't mean anything. It could simply be a mistake. I remember getting a C for a course when in reality I got an A-. I simply went to the prof (e-mailed then went in person) and fixed it in less than 5 mins.
