I understand your point completely and it makes a lot of sense, but there's one thing I would like to add. Removing the fail button has not forced everyone to place nice and encourage each other, it's only forced people to take their time and consider fellow members points more carefully. When you disagree with someone you won't be able to quickly fail someone or jump on band wagons, you'll now need to take the time to write a post stating why you disagree.
I believe removing the fail button will be a great improvement to the forum, because people will be more honest in their posts and members will take the time to write rebuttals since they can't just click fail.
