^ this. Abs are like any other muscle in the body. Given a diet which is conducive to muscle growth, if your abdominal muscles are pushed to their limits, they will grow. It's more difficult to do compared to other muscle groups, but that's what will happen.
Also, work the obliques at the same time to make things look more balanced.
