Blizzard's made it super easy to level now compared to before the Burning Crusade expansion came out. It used to be quite a challenge to get the epic mounts - now it's like taking candy from a baby. It took me about 300g and about 2 hours running an instance with my guild to get my level 60 Dreadsteed mount - now all you have to do is reach level 30 (I think) and you get one free for your warlock.
Yes, you do need to get all of the expansions to get Cata.
