What do you mean? it's literally a web-based OS, based off of Ubuntu as a platform. Download the LiveCD and give it a shot.

I don't see why you wouldn't think it's useful unless you need to use it for gaming or to run proprietary software, since you are using it for school as the title of your topic suggests. It can do word processing and web surf, and everything else that Windows can run plus more.
It is capable of surfing the Internet, as a matter of fact, it's built-in with Chrome. It uses a program called Pidgin to connect with MSN, since Microsoft never made a version of MSN Messenger for Linux.
