I don't think you understand it.
He doesn't have to actually approve of any trade. However, New Jersey won't want to give up all that stuff if Melo doesn't agree to sign an extension. It's called a "sign-and-trade." So if he doesn't approve to sign an extension with the Nets, the nets will not be willing to do the trade. Get it?
