I am by no means an expert but I think you might have to log into your router and try changing the channels until one works (my wireless g router has 1 to 14, not sure about n).

Also since your gf's laptop has a 801.11b card make sure you also set the router to broadcast b as well as n (I am not even sure if your router has that option as b is pretty outdated already)

oh one more thing, if you change the channel to a 5 GHz frequency your gf's laptop shouldn't work as wireless b protocol only works with 2.4 GHz
