Similar thing happened to my Milestone 2 months ago. Got the replacement phone, entered my gmail credentials and swapped SD cards... took less than 10 mins without having to install software on my PC. Similar experience with my old Winmo phones too.
Unfortunately, I actually do have iTunes installed for the iPhone4 I use like once every 2 months since I got it.. I really wish I didn't need it
