not true, as of a couple years ago... you will always be charged for incoming text messages unless you subscribe to some kind of text message plan or package.
check out beluga messenger, you message contacts by email or phone number instead of a username or pin. if the contact is not a beluga and you selected their phone number the service will just text the user. this is a great way to text from an ipod touch.
