doing dips on the dip machine and not the bench can cause strain to your shoulders and is actually considered somewhat a "contraindicating" exercise. i have seen people do both with their elbows tucked right into their sides going to 90 and then back up, and i have seen ppl with their elbows flared out, where it involves the chest more and probably causes more strain on the shlders
