Yes, the male urge to act tough has something to do with it.
If wearing a visor is anything like wearing a pair of glasses, I can imagine why some players wouldn't want to wear one. I hate wearing glasses, so I wear contact lenses as much as I possibly can.

Thornton doesn't play with one. There are plenty of young players who elect not to wear visors: Lucic and Stall come immediately to mind.
