I wouldn't say he's too textbook oriented, nor a hard marker. I mean obviously you have to read the textbook, but he does filter the important shit out for the in-class powerpoint slides that he posts online. As for marking, he's really chill. He just wants to see your understanding of the content. Other than the written content on exams and a group project (choose your partners CAREFULLY), there's nothing else that he really marks.
So yeah, if you want to get an A, all you really have to do is read the textbook chapter before he goes over it in class. I personally don't do this because I'm a lazy fuck, but for many, it'll help solidify certain concepts and vocabulary.
I'm not sure if it's because I have the mindset for this class, but I literally studied only three hours for the last midterm, and got an A.

He must have eased up because when I took it, I was one of 3 A-s in his class. And that was the highest mark sadly. He takes his midterm questions from the textbook worded exactly.
O and, definitely screen the English teachers at Langara for most are awful. DO NOT TAKE KUBICEK
