I've been thinking about it for more than 1 year, it seems long but it depends on your personality and what kind of tattoo you want. I went to the recent Tattoo show and out of all the tattoo artists there I really was only interested in getting work done by one artist. I talked to them, looked at their past work and got a good vibe, I'm making a consultation this week.
