i'm just wondering what kind of routine/gym workout i should start out with. i have a weak lower back and because of my weight (185lbs) for being 5"9, my knees will feel the impact if i use the treadmill. i've heard good things about the elliptical but i'm wondering if someone can give me pointers at where and what muscle to start. i really don't know much about gym workouts.

any input appreciated. thanks!!
i think Ripptoe's starting strength is a good 5x5 program to begin with. google it up and youll find a lot of resources.

basically to weed out all the bullshit out there, the most paramount are the main COMPOUND movements: bench press, squat, deadlift, power clean. These will get you, if not huge, in shape. The latter are more complicated movements and you definitely want to perfect your form. Over the past 2 months, i havn't been able to go to the gym as often as i'd like to, but just by doing a rotation of these major lifts, i've managed to keep most of my muscle mass and even gain on my major lifts.

doing bicep curls all day wont get you to the moon, but certainly one of those large compound movements will.
