That's crap, IMO. I've been to a decent number of tropical vacation destinations (California, Florida keys, Puerto Rico, Bahamas, Dominican Republic, St Maarten, St Lucia, St Thomas, Tortola, Virgin Gorda, St Kitts, Antigua, Barbados, east coast of Australia, French Riveria, Balearic islands, Greek islands, Italian riveria, Croatia/Dalmatian coast) and Maui is probably still one of my favorites. Pristine beaches, good watersports, good resorts, excellent flight options, great infrastructure, etc.... it's tough to beat. IMO the only real knock on Hawaii (and particularly Maui) is that it's extremely touristy and quite expensive, but that doesn't make the beaches any less spectacular.
To the OP -- sorry for bringing this up long after your initial question -- but have you considered the Dutch ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao)? I've never been, unfortunately, but I'm told the beaches in Aruba are spectacular and the diving in Bonaire is apparently the best in the Caribbean.
