The first book ends with the Dany scene. And it is totally and amazingly epic in the book. The goodwife is screaming and dying for like 4 pages. They go on about the hatching of the dragons for several pages and the Khal's riders stay and pledge themselves to her. It's an AMAZING scene. I wish I could type out the whole thing for you but it's way too long (since it goes on for about 10 pages). Here's the last paragraph of the first book though which generally goes with the gist of the show though they skip the whole part about her her interaction with the blood riders (and yeah her hair all burns off).

Daenerys Targaryen rose to her feet, her black hissed, pale smoke venting from its mouth and nostrils. The other two pulled away from her breasts and added their voices to the call, translucent wings unfolding, stirring the air and for the first time in hundreds of years the night came alive with the music of dragons.

That's why I consider the first book to be a prologue. Cause THERE I feel is where the story really begins.

And Jaqen H'ghar is, besides the Hound, my favorite love to hate character in the series.
