Most of my upper level ECON electives are with Douglas Catherine. It all depends on if you're willing to write papers and essays or not. I took 334, 336 and 317 with her. 334 and 336 are kind of like history lessons and for exam type questions if you know your econ you will do fine (ie. how do certain things affect GDP, inflation, etc).

Personally on a final exam I'd rather straight BS and stretch some points for 1-2 questions then go through hell. Her midterms are ALWAYS the same, take home and short answer. She is a very boring prof though so I showed up to a total of about 4 lectures in each of her classes (1 in which I went to pick up the midterm and the other was to hand it in).

But ECON 317 you have a choice of either doing a term paper (in which only 3 people did in my class) or doing some volunteer work and I literally didn't do a single thing for that and still got a pretty good grade. There will always be a keener in your group that will carry you.
