I think this debate only comes up in Vancouver because the modding scene is so small.
But in a larger market, the business model goes like this:
Car owners mod their cars entirely for the purpose of putting it in shows. They pay entry fees to compete. Just like any other sport-- you want to play, you need to pay.
Organizers take the entry fees and put on the show. They charge admission to those who attend as spectators. You need both revenue sources to make it happen, otherwise there's no profit and no incentive to put the show on.
Vancouver's modding scene has pretty much died off over the past few years. And then when a show eventually comes along, nobody wants to pay. lol
