Try an online virus scanner. Alternatively, try booting into safe mode and installing that way to see if it makes a difference. In my experience though, if you have a virus, you really are better off backing up and doing a fresh install.
Are you running Ubuntu on the same machine? If so, just run the virus scanner from there. If not, move the hard drive with the virus over and scan it that way.
