i'm taking econ 335 with douglas this term and i think it could be the first time we get to choose between a paper or volunteer work because as you said before, it was only for 317 which did the volunteer thing. So how does the sign-up work? do ppl sign up on the 1st day of class or wat? i'm asking cause i jus transfered in today and am worrying if all the good spots have already been taken

Personally on a final exam I'd rather straight BS and stretch some points for 1-2 questions then go through hell. Her midterms are ALWAYS the same, take home and short answer. She is a very boring prof though so I showed up to a total of about 4 lectures in each of her classes (1 in which I went to pick up the midterm and the other was to hand it in).
But ECON 317 you have a choice of either doing a term paper (in which only 3 people did in my class) or doing some volunteer work and I literally didn't do a single thing for that and still got a pretty good grade. There will always be a keener in your group that will carry you.
