there totally is more to the story. can't be that simple. i was thinking at first it was like that movie Changeling where the authorities return the kid to his mother but the mother discovers that the kid is an imposter.

i'm thinking if Hopley kidnapped the kid, he realized the extent of the search for him and the kid. got scared, probably brought the kid back into town at night and then sent him back home alone. then Hopley snuck back into the woods to hideout and/or kill himself.
just glad that hopley didn't get all freaked out about the exposure he has and killed the kid.
that's if hopley was the kidnapper.
