I got the same camera. I started out with aperture priority mode (I believe it's called), and just let the camera handle ISO/shutter length for me, and I controlled focal length. I played around with the different focal lengths and basically saw how they affected focus of different objects. I did that for a few weeks and it taught me tons! Then I got a tripod and started screwing around with night time photography, and as a result had to learn how to manipulate ISO/shutterspeed as well as Focal length.

Btw, I have the stock lens, a 18-50mm Sigma, and the 50mm F2.8, and the latter is my favourite by far (also the cheapest, paid $100 for it). As long as you can fit the scene you need into the 50mm lens, its idiot proof. It makes anything and everything look amazingly detailed and sharp with excellent bokeh
