It's the echo, the gun firing sounds themselves are pretty distinct but they all sound similar because the bullet crack and echo wind up drowning it out, imo.
I'm actually pretty upset at how they did sound in BF3, it's a lot harder to use sound to locate enemies than BC2 and other shooters. I don't want to have to look at the minmap all the time for a target I could have acquired by hearing alone. The original sounds get drowned out by all the environmental effects they add to it. Partly why the gun firing sounds wind up sounding similar.
And in game, almost everyone uses suppressors which is fucking retarded.
