Kind of ambiguous... did you simply ask him whether "it was ok" to bring back gas in a jerry can, or did you ask him if there would be duties on it?

Because it is "ok" to bring it back, but technically it is subject to a fairly hefty rate of duty if it's not in your gas tank.
