i don't believe ssd's fail any more than mechanical hard drives. manufacturer's are also very good with firmware updates to remedy issues or even improve performance. i.e. sandforce controller; crucial m4. google will show ya.

unless ur using a mb air, going ssd shouldn't be a compromise because you can get an optical drive->2.5" drive kit and drop in the ssd. m-sata ssd's are also an option for certain laptops, not sure if any macbooks have any free slots.
