You give them the drive, they give you a file list of what they can recover. If you want them to proceed, you pay.
The file list the gave me was no better than the GetDataBack software that I used instead. I think GetDataBack is now called Recover My Files.
That software recovered everything they said they could, and was only $70.
I wouldn't recommend 1st Data Recovery to anyone unless a) they had an extra $400 lying around or b) they weren't technically inclined enough to plug in a hard drive and run the software.

They also charge you a whooping $45 just to get your original drive back too.
