if you want it to play different formats, then it's probably best to get a PS3 for future proofing.

currently, you can get blu-ray players that can play DivX or Xvid. but they can't do every video codec. with a PS3, you can install "PS3 media server" or TVersity on your PC and then stream to your PS3 (via wifi or cat5). this way, when a new file format comes out, your PC can be updated with a simple software patch/install.

TVersity is the easier program to install and set up on your PC.

another solution is to purchase a laptop with an HDMI output and a built-in blu ray player. watch movies and other downloaded content on your laptop, and just spit the signal out to your TV via HDMI.
