OPPO if you dont mind spending a bit more

and theres some dirt cheap ones like magnavox funai etc that are actually made by 1 company and you can play discs from different regions (theres only 3 region codes when it comes to blu-rays and very few movies are actually locked) i cant remember the model # though or if they're still available the issue with these is firmware updates

but those players will also play MKV files etc either burnt on a disc or from a usb stick

havent looked into players in a long time though since im fine with just using my PS3 or laptop for region locked discs

id suggest the PS3 and buy a Remote for it did that for my dad since he hated using the ps3 controller and is far more familiar with using a remote
when they become more familiar with the unit they'll even be able use the other capabilities of the ps3 like renting movies or surfing the web etc
