You do make a good point, but IMO he should do it as a "feeler" as well. See where he stands so he's not ALWAYS having to bend over backwards to make it work. If she has a problem with him not contacting her, then thats another chance for him to REALLY voice his concerns.
If she doesnt even notice, then maybe he can take a step back and evaluate his situation.
