I haven't played the game in nearly a year, but hot was a better option because you didn't have to babysit it. With the cold drivers, unless you had a vastly superior car, you'd pretty much have to sit there and control everything. With the hot driver, you could pretty much let it go for however long and go do something else (i.e. watch TV, go on computer, or, if an endurance race, go to work, etc.) and there was a good chance you'd still win.
Hot drivers tend to push harder, so they fuck up more often, but generally not enough to offset vs. cold drivers or even the neutral drivers.
