To be fair to the OP, him and his family were looking at a certain class/budget of car, suggesting something like a used integra, regardless of whether he's paying for it out of his own pocket or not, should entitle the OP to some sort of resistance even though it makes much more economical sense.
But like everyone said, take public transit, I have a daily my parents got me and my own project car and I still take transit as much as possible, I often have work at 5AM in the morning so I don't have much of a choice there but I always bus/skytrain up to campus (partly due to ridiculous parking fees) Assuming you're going to university locally you'll probably have a u-pass, try to squeeze as much value as you can out of it, heck sometimes taking transit might be quicker. If I were you I might just try purely taking transit for the first term and hold off on buying a car, I'm guessing your family has a car or two that you can use when you really need it. My parents got me my car when I was in Gr 12 and back then I would drive it as much as possible, but now in my 2nd year of Uni it spends most of it's time parked on the street...

tofu's right.
park of...actually MOST of the reason why I don't drive to school is because of the parking costs.
My U-pass costs half (i think) of what the parking pass costs, plus w.e gas I save.
And no chance of getting into an accident

Sure you have to wait in the cold for a bit and walk a few blocks home from the bus stop but come on, just that to save hundreds a month?
