I have a slim ps3 but wouldn't it make more sense to let the receiver decode rather than the PS3 as it's already tasked with the video processing?

Speakers don't really need to be upgraded if you have some really good ones.
I have some B&W DM640 which are about 15 years old and they sound amazing.
Upgrade the receiver if you have to have the truehd.
I did buy the Pioneer vsx 521 but I had problems with it and didn't notice the sound being that much better. It is an entry level though compared to yamahas flagship reciever back in the day. So I returned it.
