Personally, I don't like thick jackets due to their bulkiness. A nice merino wool or lambswool sweater could be a good alternative, with a slimmer jacket that has synthetic insulation.
As for gloves, maybe a pair of leather gloves with wool insulation. I find the gloves with fleece or Thinsulate are a little too thick.
