Don't skip a practice, nothing else trains you like the practices do. If you miss a week or two, you will feel it.
In the gym, I would focus on the compound exercises like deadlift and squat, and even the olympic lifts like cleans and snatches. You'll want to work on feeling what it's like to use your whole body into moving weight (then translate that into doing paddling strokes)
If you need extra cardio, running helps, but I think the rowing erg is probably better albeit painful
