wish it was that simple. but its not that simple.
you have to gauge the distance of each plane, sometimes a plane makes emergency landing so you have to put other planes in a pattern, handing off planes to other atc while monitoring other planes. sometimes you have 1 landing strip so your in in charge of both departing and incoming so you have to see which plane has priority. what happens if your radar fails. you still have to guide planes
all this sometimes in a dark room and sometimes very long hours. atc people have been known to sleep on a job because of working too many consecutive shifts.
if you look discovery mayday show, there have been some fatal incident caused by air traffic controller.
