Getting a black wood look piece would also be tough. The only place I've ever seen that is the Ikea furniture, in which case I would say go buy the lack table for $20, and peel off a piece of the laminate that you need. That table is made with cardboard and love, so it shouldn't be too hard.
What are you building, or repairing?

thanks for the suggestions. I'm repairing a very small section of a desk, so I think I'll dumpster dive IKEA AS-IS for some laminate like you suggested.
